Responsibilities include:
- Conducting inspections for transportation projects such as highways, bridges, environmental, traffic, and facility projects
- Preparing daily progress reports
- Overseeing contractor crews to ensure compliance with contract specifications, and verifying the use of safe construction practices to deliver high-quality work
- Performing field tests on materials like concrete, soil, and asphalt
- Documenting materials usage, labor compliance, safety standards, processing estimates, work orders, and necessary adjustments
- Reporting on-site activities and progress to the Project Engineer, including calculation and determination of pay quantities
Requirements:
- Familiarity with VDOT Road and Bridge specifications and standards
- Understanding of OSHA safety regulations for road and bridge projects
- Strong math skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
- Proficiency with field engineering tools, testing equipment, inspection methods, and construction materials
- Ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment, including:
- Work Zone Traffic Control

Construction Materials Testing Technician

We are hiring for various positions, from Trainees and Inspectors to Senior Inspectors, to join our team in DMV, and the surrounding areas.
Essential Duties:
- Perform field and/or laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel) under the supervision of senior technicians or staff
- Provide clear, well-documented reports of findings and results
- Communicate results and data to the Project Manager and ensure accuracy before submittal
- Submit documentation and communicate as directed by the Project Manager
- Progressively take on increased responsibilities through training
- Maintain assigned equipment and ensure cleanliness of work areas
- Follow safety protocols, perform pre-task planning, and report any safety concerns to management
- Ensure quality standards are met on all projects
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to obtain ACI certification (company-sponsored) within 90 days of hire
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to obtain Nuclear Density Gauge certification (company-sponsored) within 6 months of hire
Roadway Construction Inspector
We are seeking a qualified Inspector to ensure contractors' compliance by reviewing, interpreting, and enforcing plans and contract documents for efficient and timely inspection of contractor work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively in a team environment to plan, coordinate, inspect, and oversee roadway, structure, bridge, and District maintenance projects, ensuring compliance with state standards and specifications
- Interpret site plans and apply knowledge in inspecting roadways and bridges following SHA standards, specifications, and procedures
- Apply engineering principles in the inspection and documentation of construction activities
- Oversee and assist with field changes to accommodate site conditions
- Supervise and review the work of Inspectors and Trainees (Senior Inspector role)
- Maintain comprehensive project records and documentation using eMCMS and related software
- Oversee the installation and maintenance of erosion and sediment control devices, ensuring they meet approved plans and specifications
- Apply Best Management Practices (BMPs) to safety activities on site
- Communicate effectively with project stakeholders
- Assist with developing change orders, investigations, and analyzing Notices of Intent to File Claims (senior inspector level)
Experience:
- At least 1 year of experience in roadway or bridge construction inspection
- At least 1 year of experience in traffic signal device inspection
- Must have current or be able to obtain within 6 months:
- Concrete Certification
- HMA (Asphalt) Certification
- Soils & Aggregates (Including Nuclear Gauge) Certification
- Pavement Marking Certification
- Sediment and Erosion Control Certification (SHA Erosion and Sediment Control Yellow Card for SHA ROW)
- Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification
- OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience with laptops/tablets and software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Able to pass a criminal background check
- Availability to work various shifts and weekends, depending on project assignments
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
- Physically able to perform duties such as walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
New Grad Field Engineer
We are seeking a qualified field engineer to ensure contractors' compliance by reviewing, interpreting, and enforcing plans and contract documents for efficient and timely inspection of contractor work.
What You'll Do:
- Assists with construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and other contract documents. Coordinates and schedules quality controls inspections.
- Observes on-site material testing and coordinates testing and monitoring services. Performs mathematical calculations for material quantity payments. Performs basic shop drawing review and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
- Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
- Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness and consistency. Regularly reviews contractor's as-built mark-ups, documents project progress using video and photo and prepares reports on construction progress.
- Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.
- Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
- Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assists in processing and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

- Identifies some discrepancies or conflicts within documents and gains familiarity with the quality of work performed using inspection checklists.
- Writes daily inspection report, tracks work performed, and computes pay item quantities at a basic level with direction from more experienced staff.
- Understands the shop drawing review and gains the ability to read and interpret the contractor's CPM schedule at a basic level.
